Things You Need to Know About J-1 Status
Beyond Immigration
The links below provide additional information about frequent topics of interest not directly related to student immigration status. You will need to apply for a driver's license in the U.S. if you wish to drive here, there is also information at this link on how to apply for a state ID card (a form of ID you can use on a daily basis that isn't your passport). You will need to apply for a social security number if you have been offered employment in the U.S. Many students also ask about invitation letters for their family/friends that want to visit them in the U.S., although our office does not provide these letters, there is information at the link that is useful about invitation letter requests.
