In order to maintain your status in the U.S., you must maintain full-time registration every fall and every spring semester. You are not required to register for the summer session (s) unless your academic department requires it. Check with your academic department if you are unsure.
You may count only one "online" course towards full-time enrollment per Fall or Spring semester. Unless otherwise mandated by your academic department, you are not required to enroll during summer sessions. If you choose to enroll in summer sessions, the classes may be online or in person.
During the final semester to complete your program, you are required to enroll at least in one in-person class even if it is during summer except for graduate students who are at the dissertation, thesis, or project level. Graduate students who are at the dissertation, thesis, or project level are required to enroll at least one credit of eligible course in the final semester even it if is during summer.
Undergraduate students: this means that you will be permitted three “in-person classes” and one “on-line” class for a total of twelve credits. If you want to enroll for additional credits, it doesn’t matter if they are on-line or in person. When the semester finishes, you should still have at least three in person classes and on-line class. Do not withdraw from a class if that withdrawal will bring you below twelve credits unless you are eligible for a reduced course load
Example: You want to enroll for 16 credit hours in a semester, which is above the required 12 Your enrollment would have to consist of three in person classes and one online class for a total of 12 credit hours. Any classes above those requirements can be in person or online. If you decide to drop any classes, you will have to end the semester with three in person classes and one online
Graduate students: You must be in compliance with the graduate school policy regarding full-time enrollment. Temple University’s full-time policy for graduate students is available at Graduate School Policies < Temple University and reads: To be designated full-time, a graduate student (including all recipients of Graduate School Fellowships) must be enrolled for 9 or more s.h. of coursework until all coursework is completed. To maintain your immigration status, you will be permitted to “count” one on-line class towards full-time enrollment until you have completed all coursework.
Example: You want to enroll for 12 credit hours in a semester which is above the required 9 credits. Your enrollment would have to consist of two in person classes and one online class for a total of 9 credit hours. Any classes above those requirements can be in person or online. If you decide to drop any classes, you will have to end the semester with three in person classes and one online.
