Funding Information

According to US Department of State regulations, Temple University must verify that the J-1 Applicant has sufficient funding before we can issue a Form DS-2019. Applicants must attach documentation from at least one of the options below if s/he will not receive funding from Temple University. If the document is not in English, it must be translated.

J-1 Applicant must show:

A minimum of US$24,000 per year or $2,000 per month of the program
That the money that is"liquid" (not frozen)
Extra financial documentation for dependents: $4000/year for a spouse and $2500/year per child

Funding Options/Requirements

Bank Statements

ISSS requires a recent (no more than six months old at the time of submission) bank statement.
Statement should be in English and demonstrate that funds will be readily available to meet the student's expenses.
A bank statement is a document issued by your bank that indicates when the account was opened, how much money is in the account, and who is the owner of the account.
If the bank statement is not in J-1 Applicant's name, the sponsor must must complete an Affidavit of Support. The sponsor must show an ongoing source of funding that will support the applicant while in the US.

Funding For Scholars Who Will Be Employed By A Foreign Institution While In The US:

Letter from Employer on Employer's official letterhead and signed by Employer stating that:

The salary amount that the J-1 Applicant will receive per month while in the US
The J-1 will continue to receive this salary from the Employer while in the US
The Employer will hold her/his position until J-1 returns to home institution.
The applicant will be participating in a J-1 Exchange Program at Temple University

Funding from a University For Students Enrolled in a Full-Time Academic Program Abroad:

Scholarship from a Company or Institution:

Statement from a company employee, not related to the applicant, on Company/Institutional letterhead, indicating:

The amount of funds that have been set aside for scholarship
The specific details of what expenses will be paid by the scholarship
The applicant will be participating in a J-1 Exchange Program at Temple University
ISSS reserves the right to require the most recent 3–4 Months in English of Company’s recent bank statements (per account) on bank letterhead

Funding In Relation to the J-1 Home Residency Requirement

There have been reports that the DOS Waiver Review Division tends to see any government funding during an exchange visitor's participation as subjecting an individual to 212(e), regardless of the purpose of the funding. For example, there are instances where the Waiver Review Division has found that an individual who continues to receive his or her salary from a government-funded school while participating in an exchange visitor program in the United States as being subject to 212(e) on the basis of having received government financing.
